What is illusion painting?
Illusion painting pretents on a plane image area (wall, canvas, wooden board, surface of furniture or similar) a substance, structure or spatially spread scenery, which can be taken for real and not for painted in the room or in its constructional combination where it is presented. Wall, ceiling, furniture or even floor are no longer percepted as a medium for painting but equated to the represented object by the viewer.

Types of illusion painting
Within illusion painting there are six main types to be distinguished.
For the first time they had been displayed and as well formal as textual characterized by Ursula und Martin Benad in their book “Trompe-l´oeil today“ (W.W.Norton, ISBN: 978-0393731309).
- Material imitation (faux finishing): Material imitation deals with the visual imitation of surface-features.
- Grisaille (grey tones): Grisaille creates a plastic relief with the effects of light and shadow.
- Architecture painting: With architecture painting architectural elements are pictorially pretended.
- Trompe-l’œil-boards: Classical Trompe-l’œil lives on the expression-value of its motives and still lifes and has its focus on the iconographic features.
- Panorama-paintings: The panorama painting is characterized by its creation of an extended room (that means by fictive opened up levels of reality in which the viewer is involved.)
- Ceiling painting: Illusionistic ceiling painting is panorama painting on ceiling aereas.
